The tussle for this year’s Eunisell Boot has taken a new twist with Rangers United forward, Israel Abia now level with Akwa United’s Ndifreke Effiong, in the race for top scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Abia scored on Matchday 22 to help his team Rangers edge past Adamawa United who they defeated 2-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Sunday. The goal also helped Abia climb to the summit and go level with Effiong.
Abia and Effiong are now joint top scorers with 10 goals apiece.
The Rangers man at some point before the halfway mark this season, led the goalscoring chart by two goals. But inactivity owing to a switch in club from Sunshine Stars, allowed the chasing pack to catch up with him.
However, two goals in the space of five days for Rangers ensured Abia is back in contention for the big prize, the Eunisell Boot with 16 matchdays to go.
Enyimba striker, Victor Mbaoma, is on the tail of the leading scorers, just one goal behind.
Mbaoma did not feature as his club were busy with continental football in the CAF Confederation Cup knockout stage at the weekend.
Katsina United winger, Tasiu Lawal and Plateau United’s Ibrahim Mustapha, remain at two goals behind the pacesetters, while Kano Pillars forward Auwalu Ali is proving to be a free scoring player with three goals in his last five league outings. He is now ranked as a serious contender in the race for the Eunisell Boot as he hopes to mimic former Kano Pillars man, Junior Lokosa, who won the biggest individual prize in the country in 2018.
