Enyimba head coach Usman Abdallah wants his men to raise the bar when they square up against Rivers United in Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture at the Enyimba Stadium.
Abdallah and his team have now found themselves under pressure after going winless in their last three matches including defeats at Enugu Rangers and Kwara United, and the Enyimba trainer now knows that they need to put up a refreshing performance to worm their way back into the hearts of their fans and ease their worrying position on the standings.
He has called on his men to “show a new character” when they play hosts to Rivers United in a Matchweek 6 fixture.
“What we have to do now is show a new character and determination in our next game.
“At this point we can’t afford to drop points. I’ve discussed this with the players and they understand it very well. They’ve shown a positive outlook in training and we will be going for three points so we can move on from there,” Abdallah told Enyimba media.
Abdallah further took time to calm the club’s faithful whose nerves have been jangling following their recent unassured outings in the league this season.
The Enyimba manager believes his team have been “playing well” and have only been deserted by lady luck as well as the sharpness to score goals.
“I can understand the anxiety of the supporters and they have every right to feel that way, but my players are not panicking. When you look at our games you would see that all we need is just an element of luck. We’ve been playing well. The only thing that has been lacking in our game has been notching in the goals.
“Our players know this and that’s why they are not panicking. I have a group of players that have been at a high level and understand the backlash that comes with not getting the right results. All they’ve been doing is work hard in training to ensure that the story changes on Sunday. They want to respond with a good outing on Sunday,” said Abdallah.
