Nigeria’s Supersand Eagles will begin their quest to qualify for the 2019 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Paraguay when they come face to face with one of Africa’s powerhouses Senegal at the Beach Soccer AFCON in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on Saturday.
The Supersand Eagles have also have Libya and Tanzania as opponents of Group B of the tournament but the meeting with Senegal offers the Nigerians the chance to avenge a 8-4 defeat two years ago in the showpiece match of the Beach Soccer AFCON.
Headlining the Nigerian squad for the tournament are Abu Azeez, Emeka Ogbonna, Suleiman Ogodo Mohammed, Victor Tale and Emmanuel Ohwoferia who were members of the team at the last edition when they lost on home soil on the final day to Senegal.
This time Nigeria head coach Audu Adamu also known as ‘Ejo’ has included new additions to the side in Tyson Ojukwu, Fayowole Egan-Osi, Taiwo Adams, Isah Arome and Oladele Kareem while experienced goalkeeper and former Under-17 star Dami Danjuma Paul is also in the playing personnel.
Senegal go into this match as favourites having won the African title four times including last edition’s success at the expense of Nigeria with Mamaou Sylla and Babacar Fall putting the Supersand Eagles to the sword on that occasion.
The Senegalese also top the beach soccer ranking for Africa.
The Senegal versus Nigeria game kicks off 12.30pm local time (11.30am WAT).
