Nigeria’s Under-17 team, the Golden Eaglets played themselves back into contention for a semi-final place at the WAFU-B Zone of the Africa U17 Cup of Nations qualifiers in Niger by defeating Ivory Coast 5-1 on Thursday.
After suffering a shock 2-3 loss to Burkina Faso in their opening game of Group B on Monday, Manu Garba’s team practically played the Ivorians off the park inside the opening half hour of the contest.
The Nigerians were four goals up 15 minutes before the break through Hassan Hussain, Olatomi Olaniyan, Olusegun Olakunle and Oluwatimilehin Adeniyi.
Akinkumi Amoo added a fourth in the second half before Ivorian skipper Oliver Junior Sou got his side a consolation.
It was an eye-catching performance from the Nigerian U17s who dominated from start to finish.

For the second match running, Olakunle got among the goals after scoring twice in the 2-3 defeat to Burkina Faso.
It was just over a year ago when the youngster featured for the ABS FC U15 team that won the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) U15 Promises. Olakunle was named the tournament’s most valuable player and his performance so far will not go unnoticed in Niger’s capital, Niamey
Olakunle and his team-mates will now wait till Sunday’s match between Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast to be certain of a semi-final place.
