Former CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns failed to progress beyond the group stage of the competition as Setif pull off win at MC Alger to squeeze through on Tuesday.
Playing at their Lucas Moripe Stadium ground in Pretoria, the Brazilians knew anything short of an outright victory could deny them a chance of reaching the last eight with the other match in Group C match between AS Togo-Port and Wydad Casablanca having no bearing on the matchup with Horoya AC.
Instead the 2016 CAF Champions League winners Sundowns failed to score as they played out a 0-0 draw with Horoya which allowed the Guinean side to progress behind group winners Wydad.
Failure to progress leaves a bitter pill in the mouths of Pitso Mosimane’s men who were tipped alongside Wydad to qualify from their group.
Setif started the matchday in third place in Group B behind TP Mazembe and Difaa El Jadidi in first and second positions respectively. The Algerian side needed an outright win plus a stroke of lucky in the outcome of the tie between TP Mazembe and Difaa in Lubumbashi to pan things their way.

Setif made good their chance in Algiers when they raced inti a two-goal lead against MC Alger before the half hour. MC Alger’s Ayoub Azzi turned the ball into his post to set Setif en route a 2-1 win.
El Habib Bouguelmouna doubled the lead for Setif before Walid Derrardja converted from the spot for MC Alger.
Setif go through by joining other quarter-finalists Al Ahly, Esperance, TP Mazembe, Wydad, Horoya, Etoile du Sahel and Primeiro de Agosto.
