Mikel John Obi’s father, Pa Michael Obi, has regained his freedom after spending four days in the hold of kidnappers in a community in the southeast Nigerian state of Enugu.

According to the police in Enugu State, the father of the Nigeria captain was kidnapped last Friday along Makurdi-Enugu road while travelling in his Toyota Prado SUV in the company of his driver whose name is given as Ishaya John.

Police spokesman in Enugu, SP Ebere Amaraizu, stated on Monday that Mikel’s father was rescued in Egede area near Udi Forest which is along the Old Egede Affa Road in Enugu State.

The police also revealed that the abductors of Mikel’s father and Ishaya made a demand for ransom of N10 million.

“It was gathered that Pa Michael Obi and his driver were abducted along Makurdi-Enugu Road on June 29 in the afternoon on his way from Jos in his grey-coloured Toyota Prado jeep with registration number: MUS 604 CG and taken to an unknown destination through the thick forest part of the area.

“It was further gathered that the abductors started calling to demand a ransom of N10 million before police operatives acted on intelligence information and swooped on them.

“In the process of the rescue, a gun duel ensued between police operatives and the kidnappers which forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued,” a statement from the police spokesman revealed.

The police in Enugu State says it will continue investigation into the incident.

It is the second time that Mikel’s father will be kidnapped following an incident in August 2011. Pa Obi, on that occasion, spent 12 days in captivity after he was seized in Jos. He regained freedom after police raided a neighbourhood in Kano where he was found.
