The world’s best two footballers Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and their countries became the latest to exit the World Cup in Russia and on the same day.

It also means the last edition’s finalists Argentina and holders Germany are out so early.

On Sunday, former World Cup winners Spain will be on parade as they will be put to the test by the host nation Russia while one of the dark horses Croatia go up against Denmark.

Here are betting tips for both matches:

Spain vs Russia

Spain are undefeated in their last 23 matches and are 60 places above their opponents in FIFA ranking. And when you juxtapose both teams — man-for-man — Fernando Hierro’s men are clear favourites. The Russians have reached the last 16 and I really do not fancy them going beyond the Spanish hurdle as they have never beaten their opponents in six previous meetings.

The Predictor’s tip: Spain win

The Predictor’s correct score: 2-0

Croatia vs Denmark

The Danish team are a very strong unit and defensively mean too. Age Hareide’s men do not play the type of eye-catching football the like of Spain and co or even Croatia have displayed at this tournament. But Denmark have shown they can compete. I think this game will drag into extra-time considering the qualities of Croatia and that is where Denmark’s physical superiority should come to play.

The Predictor’s tip: Denmark win

The Predictor’s correct score: 1-3
