It is Day 16 at the World Cup in Russia and the tournament’s knockout stages will go full swing from this Saturday with two mouthwatering clashes in which three former champions are involved.

I am sure the countries involved in Saturday’s Round of 16 matches would have wished for easier draw but it is the knockout stages so every team that have made it out of the groups will know that there are no margins for errors from this point.

This Saturday it is France versus Argentina and later same night, Uruguay take on Portugal. Here are my tips for betting:

France vs Argentina

The World Cup can be a crazy tournament. Most of the times, teams that put up ragged performances in the group stage will come up with the goods in the knockout phase like Italy in 1982 before hitting a purple patch. Argentina have struggled so far and they might not have the best team — man-for-man like France — I will still tip them to progress. The French face their first big test after unconvincing displays in the group stage.

The Predictor’s tip: Argentina win

The Predictor’s correct score: 1-2

Uruguay vs Portugal

This is going to be a mightily difficult match for the European champions Portugal. Reason? Uruguay are on a mean streak defensively — yet to concede in last six international matches including friendlies. Anyway that should not be a reason to have your tails up when placing a bet, as Cristiano Ronaldo is still lurking. He converts half chances and can cause the South Americans trouble. The Portuguese look good to progress for me.

The Predictor’s tip: Uruguay win

The Predictor’s correct score: 0-1
