Villarreal defender Ruben Semedo has been refused bail as he faces attempted murder charges.
The 23-year-old’s plea was denied by a judge.
Semedo was arrested last month for a number of charges which included robbery, assault, “illegal detention” and possession of illegal weapons.
The former Portugal Under-21 centre-back denies all the allegations.
“While always respecting the notion that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, the club has decided to suspend the player from duties without pay until the ongoing case has been settled,” Villarreal said in a statement on their website following Semedo’s arrest in February.
“Villarreal would like to show its horror at the grave crimes the player Ruben Semedo was charged with.”
Semedo joined Villarreal from Sporting Lisbon in a £12.3m deal last summer.
He has played five times for the La Liga outfit this season – with his last being a 2-0 defeat by Barcelona on December 10.
