Akwa United widened their lead at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) standings by just a point after they were held to a 1-1 by FC Ifeanyiubah in Nnewi on Wednesday.

Cyril Olisema’s goal on 12 minutes set the a fine start to the game for the Promise Keepers who have now extended their impressive run to four matches without defeat.

Akwa Starlets graduate Aniekeme Asuquo was in the thick of things in the build-up to the goal. He slipped Olisema through and the former Ikorodu United did the rest by skipping past a marker before picking his spot to beat FC Ifeanyiubah goalkeeper Drissa Bamba.

However the table-toppers could only hang on to their lead for 36 minutes before FC Ifeanyiubah captain Patrick Ikeokwu scored in a three-player move. Pascal Seka did well to shield his marker off the ball to pass it to Chijioke Alaekwe who laid it on a plate for Ikeokwu to smash home.

It ended all square as Akwa United kept top spot for another matchday. Abdu Maikaba’s men now have 13 points after six matches, one more second-placed Plateau United.

Plateau United suffered a two-nil defeat at Kano Pillars. It was all about the league’s top scorer Junior Lokosa. He scored quickfire goals on 21 and 27 minutes to help Pillars see off the champions.

The win ensured the Kano club remain in third place with 11 points.

Stanley Dimgba was once again the bright spark for Enyimba as he helped them edge past Abia Warriors in the derby. It looked like it was heading to a scoreless outcome when Dimgba curled home a free kick past a scrambling Abia Warriors goalkeeper Agbor Ekoi who was caught off his line.

Enyimba move into the top spot for the first. The goal was Dimgba’s third on the spin in three successive matchweeks as he continues to shoulder goalscoring responsibility for the People’s Elephant.

Jesse Akila and Waheed Adebayo are gradually forming an interesting partnership in attack for MFM FC. Both men combined twice to lead MFM to a 2-1 win over Wikki Tourists. Waheed scored the first with Akila providing the assist and Waheed returned the favour as Akila scored the winner after Nafiu Kabuga levelled from the spot for Wikki.

Yobe Desert Stars and Sunshine Stars ran out 1-0 winners over Katsina United and El-Kanemi Warriors respectively. Chinedu Ohanachom scored for Yobe Stars while Kehinde Adedipe got Sunshine Stars winner.
