Akwa United forward Ajibola Otegbeye will be unavailable to face four-time champions Kano Pillars in Wednesday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Invitational Tournament at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
Otegbeye suffered a dislocation to his shoulder in his club’s opening game in the ongoing pre-season tournament on Monday and had to be replaced by Musa Newman in the 88th minute of their 1-1 draw with MFM FC on Matchday 1.
The Akwa United striker had his shoulder wrapped in bandage until Tuesday night when it was removed, npfl.ng learned.
The club’s spokesman Mfon Patrick explained to npfl.ng that Otegbeye looks all but out of their Matchday 2 game against Kano Pillars following the shoulder injury.
“His injury did not look good when I saw it, and I doubt he will be part of the match on Wednesday. I am not the team doctor and have not got further information on his current condition,” Patrick said on the eve of their match.
Otegbeye, who joined the Promise Keepers from Sunshine Stars in the first transfer window ahead of the NPFL, ruled out himself of the Kano Pillars game.
“I won’t be part of the game against Kano Pillars,” Otegbeye said. “It is painful to miss such a game as I had been looking forward to it all week, but it is one of those things in football,” said Otegbeye to npfl.ng.
Otegbeye scored Akwa United’s goal that helped his team earn a point against MFM.
