It is past three months since Plateau United claimed their first Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title. Football is now back in the top division in Nigeria with the NPFL Invitational ahead of the new campaign which is just about a month away.
Six teams – Akwa United, Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Plateau United, MFM FC and the Super Eagles – have been lined up for the NPFL Invitational with Matchday 1 starting on Monday.
George Akpayen, also known as The Predictor, takes on www.aclsports.com chief football writer, Fisayo Dairo, who is also a Nigerian football expert and a sports analyst. Dairo will feature all through the NPFL Invitational starting from Matchday 1 to the final day of the tournament on Sunday, 17 December.
MATCHDAY 1 GAMES
Plateau United v Enyimba
The Predictor: There is a new manager at Enyimba in Paul Aigbogun, a factor for the players to give their all. Aigbogun’s men, including the new signings, will be fired up by competition for places and will see off Plateau United who have been poor in pre-season so far. I think Plateau United are yet to get over the hangover of celebrating their first title.
Dairo: I’m going for a slim victory for Enyimba. They’ve developed a thick skin to losing during pre-season so far and Plateau United have not looked like they are ready for a big season next year.
The Predictor’s prediction: 0-2
Dairo’s prediction: 0-1
Akwa United v MFM FC
The Predictor: Under Abdu Maikaba, Akwa United have become a different proposition and playing against MFM means we will get to see two teams who enjoy playing attacking football. The problem for MFM in this game will be the fact that they will not have the services of their attacking duo of Sikiru Olatunbosun and new signing Victor Mbaoma (both named in the Super Eagles team). Akwa are in good shape already and I am backing them to edge out MFM.
Dairo: I go for an Akwa victory because they seem to be a well drilled engine. They’ve had a pretty decent pre-season so far and I believe the loss of Victor Mbaoma to the CHAN Eagles will affect MFM.
The Predictor’s prediction: 1-0
Dairo’s prediction: 2-0
