Kebbi BSC braced for Copa Lagos

By George Akpayen

Kebbi Beach Soccer Club head coach Abdullahi Isah hopes that his team can make a statement when the Copa Lagos Beach Soccer gets underway on Eko Atlantic City in Lagos this Friday.

The manager of the Kebbi team knows that they are ranked “outsiders” in a field that includes English side Arsenal, Pepsi Football Academy and Gidi Sharks.

Kebbi BSC have the honour of playing the opening game at the Copa Lagos this year but it will be against sturdy opposition in Arsenal’s beach soccer team.

Isah acknowledged that they will come up against a “world-class” side and only hopes that their fighting spirit can help them

“I see this as our first major tournament and we want to approach it with an organized mindset though we are considered outsiders, we must have the right mentality as we want to get a result.

“We’re not looking up to the oppositions, we could play against any team. We know Arsenal are world class and they look favourites to win, but we are going to come to this game with the same mentality,” Isah said.

The former Nigeria beach soccer national team goalkeeper added that Kebbi BSC have “prepared well” for the tournament and is looking forward to make their mark.

“We have prepared well and had several training games. This tournament is important for us and we hope to make a statement and a successful ending,” he said.

Kebbi BSC will play Gidi Sharks in their second game on Saturday and round off their participation at Copa Lagos when they face Pepsi Football Academy on Sunday.

Four countries, Lebanon, Morocco, Nigeria and Spain, will also take part at this year’s Copa Lagos.

Spain, runners-up at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2013, are clearly favourites. La Furia Roja (The Red Fury) will begin their campaign at Copa Lagos against Lebanon, who are now becoming a regular fixture at the annual tournament.

Friday’s schedule will be rounded off when it serves an all-African clash between Nigeria’s Supersand Eagles and Morocco.
