Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Niger Tornadoes claimed their first win of the Gold Cup pre-season tournament with a 1-0 win over FC Ebedei at the Kwara Stadium in Ilorin on Sunday.

On-loan striker from Wikki Tourists, Mubarak Umar scored the winner for the Minna club.

Umar made the switch from Wikki to Tornadoes on a season-long loan and has already seamlessly slotted into the setup of Abubakar Bala.

FC Ebedei goalkeeper Tosin Dauda had to stay alert and brave during the contest as he denied Uche Onwasanya and Solomon Owello.

Tornadoes were largely untroubled except for a tame effort from Oluwatosin Adegbite and then an attempt hit off target by Daniel Bartholomew.

It was the NPFL team that got the winner at the death when Umar calmly tapped in Ibrahim Babawos inch-perfect cross past Dauda.

In an all-NPFL clash at the pre-season tournament, Lobi Stars cruised past Rivers United 2-0.

Last season’s top scorer in the NPFL Anthony Okpotu and veteran midfielder Cletus Itodo scored a goal each for Lobi on day five of the competition.

The win ensures Lobi move into tip spot in Group A with five points, same with Kano Pillars. The Makurdi club lead their group by virtue of superior goal difference.
