Yobe Desert Stars have won promotion from the second tier in Nigeria to the top division for the first time since they were relegated in 2002.
The club defeated Adamawa United 2-0 on the final day in the Northern Conference of the Bet9ja Nigeria National League (NNL) to seal their passage to the NPFL on Wednesday.
Maigari Bajibri and Maika Zaruma scored the goals for the Damaturu club.
Yobe Stars join Kwara United as the clubs promoted to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). They finished in second with 40 points, four behind Kwara United.
It is the first time they will make a return to the top flight since 2002 when they finished in the bottom-four and got relegated alongside NPA (now Warri Wolves), El-Kanemi Warriors and Jasper United.
Kwara United on the other lost 1-2 at home to FC Taraba. The result is inconsequential for Kwara United as they had already sealed a return to the top division but it meant so much for FC Taraba as they kept their place in the second tier.
FRSC FC, FC Abuja and Afe Babalola FC have been relegated the NNL Northern Conference.
In the Southern Conference, Heartland were held to a scoreless draw by second-placed Go-Round FC in a top-of-the-table clash.
Heartland missed the chance to claim a 19th win of the season as Francis Momoh’s spot kick was saved on 71 minutes.
The Naze Millionaires now have 60 points and still hold an eight-point lead over Go-Round FC while Bayelsa United in third place have 51 points after playing out a 1-1 draw at Akwa Starlets.
The race for promotion in the Southern Conference of the NNL is still open.
