Nigeria second tier league outfit Osun United gave themselves a productive beginning in their bid to reach the semifinals of the Aiteo Cup with a 1-0 win over Sunshine Stars at the Osogbo Township Stadium on Wednesday.
Tosin Omoyele scored the only goal of the first leg contest in which the hosts Osun United played with 10 men for 55 minutes after defender Emmanuel Osigwe got the marching order following a second yellow card offence.
On 66 minutes, Omoyele nodded in the winner from a goalmouth melee to give the Omoluabi Giants the initiative ahead of the second leg billed to hold at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode this Saturday.
However Dayo Ojo’s free kick had clipped the post with Osun United goalkeeper Ayo Ojo well-beaten in the first half but the Osun club held on to take a goal advantage into the second meeting.
Cup holders FC Ifeanyiubah were the big winners in the first leg games of the last eight. They defeated ABS FC who have been relegated from the country’s top divison, the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this season.
Godwin Obaje scored twice while Mohammed Suleiman got the other to make the second leg a mountain to climb for ABS.
Ebenezer Odeyemi and Bolaji Adeyemo scored for Niger Tornadoes to run out two-nil winners in the all-NPFL clash with Plateau United. The Jos club eyeing a first double after winning the league title 11 days ago will have to produce a performance that will overturn Tornadoes’ two-goal to keep their hopes of a double alive.
The fourth quarterfinal between Akwa United and Katsina Feeders has been moved to this weekend tentatively.
In the women’s competition, Bayelsa Queens, Ibom Angels and Abia Angels defeated Nasarawa Amazons, Pelican Stars and Confluence Queens by similar 1-0 scorelines respectively.
The Rivers Angels and Edo Queens game ended 0-0 with the second leg to hold in Benin City.
