Aruna Quadri gave his country something to cheer at the ITTF Nigeria Open by defeating Frenchman Antoine Hachard 4-2 in the men’s singles final at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos on Sunday.
The 30-year-old triumphed in the six-game contest 11-13, 11-3, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.
It was a difficult start for Quadri. Three unforced errors in the opening game by Quadri meant he trailed 8-6 before rallying back to 8-8. Hachard nonetheless took the first game 13-11.
The Nigerian simply cruised through the second game 11-3, blowing away his French opponent.
In the third game, Quadri raced into a 3-0 lead but Hachard fought back to take the lead at 6-4 before winning the game 11-8.
Hachard made sure Quadri found the going tough despite scores of the host nation fans clamouring for their homeboy, though the Nigerian picked up the fourth game 11-7.
Quadri upped the ante with the backing of the home crowd to comfortably take the fifth game 11-5.
The world number 18 won sixth game 11-7 to be crowned champion in the men’s singles.
Before the men’s singles final, Quadri had defeated Supanut Wisutmaythangkoon of Thailand 4-0 in the semis. He won in straight games of 11-9, 14-12, 11-9 11-8. Hachard defeated Scotsman Gavin Rumgay 4-0 (11-8, 11-6, 11-4, 11-7).

Chinese complete 1, 2 in women’s singles
Guo Yan clinched the women’s singles title by defeating her compatriot Chen Sun 4-3 in a tight affair. It was a second title for her at the Nigeria Open after winning the U21 women’s singles.
Yan won the seven-game battle 7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 7-11, 9-11, 11-4, 12-10.
China also claimed the men’s and women’s U21 singles through victories for Shaobo Wang and Guo Yan. The Chinese also won the women’s doubles courtesy victory by Fenjie Qi and Sun.
However Hungarian Tamas Lakatos and Benedek Olah of Finland combined to win the men’s doubles.
