The hopes of the host nation to reach the deep end of the women’s table tennis singles at the 2018 ITTF Challenge Seamaster Nigeria Open came to a halt as Olufunke Oshonaike and Cecilia Akpan were eliminated in the round of 16.
After booking their places into the last 16 in the women’s event, Oshonaike lost to Chinese player Fan Siqi while Akpan was beaten by Hungary’s Szandra Pergel.
Playing simultaneous around noon local time on Saturday, number 8 seed Oshonaike lost to 12-seeded Siqi 11-2, 11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 12-10.
Akpan did not do any better as she succumbed to number 2 seed Pergel. She lost 11-4, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 11-4.
Defeats to the Nigeria pair signalled the end for the host country in the women’s singles as China continued their dominance at the tournament.
Apart from Siqi who has reached the next round of the Nigeria Open for the women’s event, Wei Wensheng, Guo Yan, Qi Fenjie and Sun Chen Wang Shu all won their matches in the round of 16 to progress to the last eight.
