Tyronne Ebuehi’s dream of starting the new season with Portuguese side SL Benfica suffered a blow after the Nigeria defender ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.
The club announced that the 22-year-old in pre-season action and will now go under the knife in the coming days.
At the moment, Ebuehi’s timeline for a return remains indefinite until after the surgery on his injured ligament of the left knee.
“The athlete Tyronne suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee and will undergo surgical intervention in the next few days,” Benfica announced on their website Monday.
The development means Ebuehi will not feature on Benfica’s third qualifying round matchup with Fenerbahce next month.
Ebuehi, born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father and Dutch mother, joined Benfica from ADO Den Haag on a five-year contract.
He has made seven international appearances for Nigeria including the 2-0 success over Iceland at the FIFA World Cup in Russia this year.
