Nigeria captain Mikel John Obi cut a frustrated look after his team’s defeat to Argentina in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday meant they were eliminated from the World Cup.
The 31-year-old midfielder struggled to put words together after the match and also held back tears.
Mikel was lost for words and simply uttered “nothing to say” at the start of the interview after the match.
But the former Chelsea mustered up the courage to salute the resoluteness of the Nigerian squad for battling till the last moment of the game before Marcos Rojo’s goal eliminated them.
“It is what it is. Nothing to say. We did all we can. We conceded two goals. I am so proud of the boys, we pushed, they pushed and did everything possible against this great team. Unfortunately we lost. It is disappointing,” said Mikel after the match.
Sadly for the Nigeria skipper, the defeat to the Argentines happened on a night he made his 85th international appearance.
