NPFL predictions: The Predictor vs Ojeikere Aikhoje

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) inches closer to the 200-goal mark. It is just six goals away though the goals per game ratio still stands at one. For this matchweek, the focus will centre in the southeast of the river where two derbies will take place.

The clubs with record titles, Enugu Rangers and Enyimba, go head to head while Abia Warriors face FC Ifeanyiubah in Nnewi this Sunday. Also of interests are the matches involving title-holders Plateau United and table-toppers Kano Pillars who both play on the road this gameweek.

However of big interest for us at is our guest Ojeikere Aikhoje, who works as an NPFL pundit with SuperSport TV. He is also the founder of the League Bloggers Awards (LBA) and interestingly has a more than a soft spot for Rangers. So we will find out what his outcome of that big clash between his team and Enyimba will be in this edition’s challenge.

Solomon Ogbeide and his Lobi men have quietly been putting results on the board with Samad Kadiri being a central figure in their performances so far this season. Lobi have won twice on the road this season and are now looking to stretch their run of no defeats to four matches.

But Katsina United will look to play spoilers. Abdullahi Biffo’s men will not roll over easily but Lobi will get the work done by edging past them. Aikhoje, on the other, believes it will be smooth-sailing for Lobi with a big margin win.

The Predictor’s prediction: 1-0

Aikhoje’s prediction: 3-0

Rivers United dropped points at home to FC Ifeanyiubah last matchday and wil look to recoup that when they head to Jos where they will face Wikki who have failed to win in their last three matches. Rivers United will not have experienced goalkeeper Rotimi Sunday between the sticks as he begins a three-match ban.

Nonetheless, I do not expect Wikki’s patchy run to come to an end. I know Nafiu Kabuga Bala has been in fine form for Wikki so far, and United will be wary of that fact. Eguma has got several options in attack now with Chikere Osita, Guy Keumian, Emeka Ogbugh and Bamba Bakari all available. I tip United as favourites though Aikhoje believes this will end in a share of points.

The Predictor’s prediction: 0-1

Aikhoje’s prediction: 1-1

Former Cup champions FC Ifeanyiubah are still seeking for a first time win over their rivals Abia Warriors in this southeast derby. Six previous games between the two sides and no wins for the Anambra Warriors with five of those ending in draws. Ladan Bosso’s men have enjoy decent outings in their last two matches and are raring to make it three.

Aikhoje has already tipped the Anambra Warriors to cruise to a win in this fixture. Abia Warriors are capable of anything with the like of Ndifreke Effiong and Samson Obi. They have formed a fine partnership upfront in the absence of Sunday Adetunji who has been out since last season due to injury. This will end in a share of points.

The Predictor’s prediction: 1-1

Aikhoje’s prediction: 2-0

Troubled Kwara United head coach John Obuh will have to start puting points on the board as his three-match ultimatum enters its second game. The Harmony Boys were beaten 1-0 last weekend at Abia Warriors stretching their run of no wins to three and leaving them in bottom place. Stephen Alfred has been the man shouldering goalscoring responsibilities so far and his five strikes have been insufficient to help his team.

This game is also a six-point as El-Kanemi are in the bottom-four and this should be of concern for their head coach Imama Amapakabo. Just three wins in 11 is not an ideal start for the Maiduguri club. Kwara United are struggling no doubt, I am backing them to win this. Aikhoje also agrees.

The Predictor’s prediction: 2-1

Aikhoje’s prediction: 2-0

League champions Plateau United return to domestic competition after suffering a 2-4 defeat at Etoile du Sahel in the CAF Champions League in midweek. Conceding three goals in seven minutes in Tunisia was disheartening for their faithful though they rallied to make the scoreline respectable. Tornadoes lie in wait for them at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna this Sunday.

Tornadoes have found their mojo to some extent under interim head coach Abara Hamza. And playing at their Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna once more after a three-year absence has boosted confidence levels. I expect Plateau United to keep things very tight at the back and play smash and grab. United will take the full points. Aikhoje goes for a Tornadoes win.

The Predictor’s prediction: 0-1

Aikhoje’s prediction: 2-1

This is going to be a tricky contest for the table-toppers in Damaturu when Yobe Stars play hosts. Mohammed Baba Ganaru knows Kano Pillars so well and will aim to use that knowledge to good effect in setting up his team. Also, Yobe Stars are only one of three clubs with a 100 per cent streak at home and have not conceded too at home.

Kano Pillars take an eight-game unbeaten run to Damaturu with every eyes on leading scorer Junior Lokosa who has netted 10 goals in 11 appearances. He has accounted for 67 per cent of Pillars’ 15 goals which makes him a man to watch. Aikhoje bravely gives this game to Pillars but I am going for a score draw.

The Predictor’s prediction: 1-1

Aikhoje’s prediction: 0-2

Sunshine Stars will put new boys Go Round to the test. Duke Udi’s team still have their troubles off the pitch but they have somehow found a way to soldier on amid all of that. The Owena Waves are always dangerous and know how to squeeze life out of their opponents when they are in full flight.

Go Round will have to be wary of their opponents who have a good spread of goalscorers in Sikiru Alimi, Abiodun Joseph, Franklin Sasere, Kehinde Adedipe and Tayo Adebogun but I believe they will win. But Go Round head coach Ngozi Elechi is confident of a win. “We will march on at our home games. We have character. Our strength is in our home matches so we believe we will take the points against Sunshine Stars,” said Elechi. Aikhoje gives it to Go Round too.

The Predictor’s prediction: 1-0

Aikhoje’s prediction: 1-0

The game of the matchday. Aikhoje already tips Rangers to eke out a slim win against their rivals. But Rangers have managed just a win over Enyimba in their last nine league meetings. This game would not produce goals by the bucket as the two coaches will keep things tight at the back.

Of course there is Rangers head coach Gbenga Ogunbote not often losing to his previous employers. He only switched from Aba to Enugu but the People’s Elephant come into this with seven matches unbeaten in the league. Paul Aigbogun’s men are my pick to win this derby.

The Predictor’s prediction: 0-1

Aikhoje’s prediction: 2-1

MFM come off a 2-1 win over Algerian club MC Alger in midweek to play hosts to Heartland. This will be only their third meeting in the NPFL with the previous two ending with a win apiece. Heartland have put together an inconsistent sequence since the start of the season. Only last matchday lost at home to Lobi and that has put Ramson Madu under pressure.

It should not be a stroll for any of the clubs but MFM know that taking points from this will push them further away from the bottom-four. Aikhoje adds to it saying: “MFM are a strong side at home. They hardly drop points so this is a game they can win considering the stop-start form of Heartland.”

The Predictor’s prediction: 1-0

Aikhoje’s prediction: 3-1

I am sure that Abdu Maikaba would have been livid with his team when they conceded that late goal at Al Ittihad in the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday. Nevertheless, the Promise Keepers will now have to focus on playing Nasarawa United on Monday which gives them an extra day to plan and rest.

This season is the slowest I have seen Nasarawa United recover from their usual poor start. The Solid Miners have been far from solid on the road this season – losing all five away games. So the Promise Keepers return home for the first time in 24 days, and Aikhoje and I tip them to win this.

The Predictor’s prediction: 2-0

Aikhoje’s prediction: 2-0

• Another below average matchweek for The Predictor and his guest Ayodeji Adegbenro. The guest got THREE correct results including ONE perfect score out of seven games (totalling FOUR points). The Predictor managed TWO correct scores with no exact result, taking his total to TWO points.
