Nigerian champions Plateau United continued their fine run in defence of their title with a 1-0 defeat of seven-time winners Enugu Rangers on Wednesday but Aiteo Cup holders and last season’s runners-up MFM FC fell to Lobi Stars and Sunshine Stars respectively.
The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title holders were made to work for their win by Rangers as they had to wait for 77 minutes to secure the full points.
Plateau United’s goal came from an unusual source and a former Rangers man, Chizoba Amaefule who directed his header past Femi Thomas between the sticks from a well-delivered cross by Sunday Ingbede.
The Jos club move into top spot with 18 points, one better than second-placed Kano Pillars as well as Lobi Stars and Enyimba in third and fourth positions respectively.
Akwa United were defeated 1-0 at Lobi Stars and therefore lost their top-three place with their conquerors moving into the top-three. Austine Ogunye got Lobi’s goal.
Sunshine Stars had to rely on substitute Tayo Adebogun’s goal from a free kick 12 minutes to full time to seal a 2-1 win over MFM FC.
Sikiru Alimi had opened scoring for Sunshine Stars on nine minutes before Nojeem Akinyemi restored parity for MFM six minutes into the restart.
However Adebogun had the last say with a well-struck free kick to ease the pressure on the Akure Gunners who have endured a difficult period off the pitch these past weeks.
