Real Madrid may have been dealt a serious blow in their preparations for next week’s derby against Atletico after midfielder Isco was forced to withdraw from the Spanish squad due to injury.
The 25-year-old started for Julen Lopetegui’s side in their 5-0 win over Costa Rica in Malaga on Saturday but was replaced by Marco Asensio after 65 minutes.
A heavy tackle by Kendall Watson did the damage and, according to AS, Isco will miss Spain’s match with Russia on Tuesday and may not play a part at the Wanda Metropolitano next Saturday.
He has been able to cement a regular place in the team due to the ongoing absence of Gareth Bale through injury.
An injured Isco would be a significant blow for Zidane as his team travel to Atletico eight points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
His side have lost two of their last three matches and, with Barcelona travelling to Leganes next, can not afford to drop further behind Ernesto Valverde’s side.
The knock to Isco was the only blip on a dominant evening for Spain, who ran out comfortable winners at La Rosaleda Stadium in Malaga.
Goals came from Jordi Alba, Alvaro Morata, Andres Iniesta and David Silva, who scored twice.
